Your are invited ...

Chuck Newman, Amy Yurko, and the rest of the SCW Board of Directors would like to invite you to our

First Annual School Aid Fundraiser for Schools for the Children of the World.

Schools for the Children of the World (SCW) is a 501.c.3 non-profit organization who partners with communities and other organizations, including governmental and non-governmental entities, to help communities fund, plan, design and build quality school facilities and related projects.  SCW has also worked with national and regional governments and private educational organizations to help them create a vision for their future educational facilities, and create policies and design guidelines that focus on creating quality safe learning environments within and supported by the local community.

Since 1997, SCW has helped many communities to plan and design schools and other related facilities for health and education in Honduras, Nicaragua, Belize, Haiti, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, Nigeria, Liberia and India. Our success is based on our school facility planning and design experience and our ability to identify and successfully partner with local communities, local and international NGOs, and regional and national governmental agencies.

Visit our website at www.SchoolsForChildren.org for more information about SCW or to make a Donation.

So why a fundraiser?

The cost for a new school in many developing countries is about $25,000 per classroom. That includes all planning, design, construction, and construction administration costs. These buildings are built to include most US design and construction standards for safety and accessibility.  They are also designed to take advantage of natural light and ventilation to enhance the learning environment for the students.

SCW helps communities by providing approximately 50% of the cost of the schools we build.  Local communities and local, regional and national governments are expected to come together to provide the remaining 50% of the value of the project.  This is often accomplished by donating property, local materials and labor as well as funds.  The funds SCW raises are used to fund SCW's portion of these projects.

In addition to building new schools, SCW also focuses on the renovation of existing schools. We accomplish this through volunteer trips to Honduras in February and July of each year. Additional trips are being planned to Haiti and Nigeria in the near future.

We are currently working on four projects that you will hear more about at our first ever School Aid event. Some of the projects that we will highlight with you on November 12th include:

  • SCW is currently working on several new schools/classrooms in Honduras, Haiti, and Africa. For example, SCW is facilitating the construction of a small rural school in La Bosita, Honduras for less than 100 students which will cost approximately $60,000.  SCW has also partnered with SCW-Canada to replace an existing school serving 1,200 children in Santa Cruz, Honduras which will cost approximately $750,000. SCW is willing to help wherever there is a need, from single classroom additions to new schools to teachers' colleges.

  • SCW has partnered with the Archdiocese of Chicago and Loyola University to assist with the improvement of schools in Nsukka, Nigeria. Our goal is for this project to become a model for all schools in the region.  SCW has partnered with the Rotary Clubs of Naperville, Naperville Rotary Charities, Rotary International, and Mission Outreach to assist three local hospitals and a maternity clinic in Nsukka, Nigeria with over $4,000,000 of desperately needed medical equipment.  Together, these projects will transform the quality of education and health care for the entire region.

  • SCW is working in Arusha, Tanzania on the construction of a new school. The first phase of the project is two classrooms and bathrooms for children with special needs. Future phases will allow this school to serve all children in the area, helping all people in the area to understand people with special needs and to accept them into the community.

Join us for a fun yet insightful evening, including hors d'oeuvres and wines from around the world while learning about the people, places, and SCW's several projects currently underway throughout the world. You will find  your heart strings singing at the end of the evening at the impact you will have on these communities and Children of the world.
